"Abnormally rapid breathing usually accompanied by air swallowing. Hyperventilation results in excessive intake of oxygen and increased elimination of carbon dioxide, which may eventually lead to a disturbance in the body's acid-base balance." The line of thinking then goes that if you can lengthen your breathing, then you can lengthen your life.
